KICK ASS

Dario Dodig

I have to admit at first glance of the movie poster and name, seeing a teenager dressed up as a superhero, did not look so appealing; it looked childish and lame. However my cousin desperately wanted to see it, so I tagged along anyway.

Much to my pleasant surprise, the movie was far from lame. Bearing an MA15+ rating it was both hilarious and had great action – read: lots of blood – and the storyline wasn’t that bad if you could ignore some of the unrealistic moments and play along with the romantic side story.

The story begins with main character Dave Lizewski played by Aaron Johnson asking the question “Why hasn’t anyone ever tried to be a super hero?” His friends tell him it’s impossible without superpowers. He decides to prove them wrong.

Without giving away too much, Dave begins fighting crime by attempting to beat up some car-jacking teens. The result – he ends up nearly dead in hospital with a stab wound. You would think this would deter him, but it only strengthens his cause.

There are other amazing characters in the movie such as ‘Hit girl’, played by 13 year old Chloe Moretz who spouts some of the funniest dialogue I’ve ever heard simply because you don’t expect it to be coming from a young girl. Also her father ‘Big Daddy’ played by Nicolas Cage serves the role of her mentor while she learns the family business so to speak.

It is based on the comic books created by Mark Millar, which he revealed after the screening was inspired by his own childhood contemplations strikingly similar to those of Dave’s.

Overall Kick Ass is an enjoyable experience. Funny, action packed and believable characters that we could all relate to on some level. Far exceeded my expectations I had before sitting down to watch.
8/10 from me!

  1. great review! I thought this film was pretty epic with all the actions. Not to mention the butterfly knives and bazooka :)
